The benefits of good attic ventilation cannot be overemphasized: a properly ventilated attic will save hundreds of dollars every year in energy costs and can save thousands of dollars in the premature aging and damage to the structural integrity of roofing components.

Superheated summer air or cold, moist winter air that is trapped in an improperly or poorly vented attic penetrates ceiling insulation and seeps into the living space below, causing air conditioners and heaters to work overtime. The results are higher energy costs to the consumer - sometimes as much as several hundred dollars every year - and unnecessary strain on home cooling and heating systems that reduces equipment life.

Prolong Shingle Life

Extremes in attic temperatures can also lead to premature aging of roof shingles and roofing underlayments. In fact, many shingle manufacturers now require that roofers meet minimum ventilation standards for validation of shingle warranties.

Protect Roof Structure

Another benefit of proper attic ventilation is the elimination of damaging condensation build up caused by trapped attic air - whether hot or cold. Condensation build up can weaken or destroy the roof deck, decrease the effectiveness of ceiling insulation, and increase the likelihood of ice dam formation on the outside of the roof and in gutters.0
